Last weekend was one for the history books. As we officially kicked off our 50th Anniversary celebrations, the club was buzzing with an energy that only five decades of community spirit could produce. Seeing the Mayor, Sam Zair, open the month-long festivities reminded us all how far we have come since 1975.
This milestone isn't just about the games won or lost; it’s about the people who have called our club home for half a century.
The Heart of the Club: Our People
Saturday belonged to our veterans. The match between Taff’s Reds and Dave’s Blues was less about the final score and more about the reunion of over 40 former players. Hearing from John Walker, our very first captain, was a highlight for many. His journey from leading the first-ever squad to coaching the next generation just a couple of years ago perfectly captures the BARUFC spirit.
We capped off a brilliant Saturday with a performance from Rock Choir. Having the community come together to rock the club was the perfect "feel-good" finish to a day centered on connections and family.
Celebrating Our Future and Our Ladies
Sunday took a more glamorous turn with our Ladies’ Day. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the women who make this club what it is, filled with glitz and glam and a great atmosphere. We pride ourselves on being trailblazers for women’s rugby, and seeing the clubhouse full of supporters was a testament to that.
While we celebrated our history, we also paused to honour a significant transition. After 15 years of incredible service, Coach Mark Binns stood on the sidelines for his final match against the Durham County President’s selection. We are also thrilled to see the grassroots pathway we've built continues to produce talent, with James Holliday and Joel Butler heading to the North of England Assessment Day on 10 May.
What’s Coming Up This Month
The 50th Anniversary is a marathon, not a sprint! We have a packed calendar ahead:
Minis and Juniors (9 May): We are preparing to host over 750 young players. It is going to be a massive day celebrating the kids who will lead us into the next 50 years.
The Grand Finale: We will be closing out the month with our Seniors presentation and the 50th Anniversary Dinner.
To everyone who has played, cheered, or volunteered over the last 50 years—thank you. You are the reason BARUFC is still going strong half a century later.
Here’s to the next 50!
